Idris Elba in Talks to Play Deadshot in ‘Suicide Squad’ Sequel After Will Smith’s Exit

People’s 2018 sexiest man alive may be joining the DC Universe.

Reports indicate that Luther star Idris Elba is in talks to take on the role of Deadshot in the upcoming new Suicide Squad sequel film. The upcoming new film is a sequel to the 2016 film which starred Will Smith and Margot Robbie. Late last week, news broke that Smith had chosen to exit the upcoming James Gunn-penned sequel film due to scheduling conflicts leaving the role of Deadshot wide open for recasting.

According to the Hollywood Reporter, Elba was Gunn’s first and only choice to be recast into the role. The two met on Friday of last week and their discussions reportedly went extremely well.

At this point, little else is known about the upcoming sequel film. The film is said to be in the casting stage. Sources say that Gunn is expected to use several new DC characters not featured David Ayer’s first film in addition to some returning characters such as Deadshot and Margot Robbie’s Harley Quinn. This would, without a doubt, ensure the sequel as a fresh take on Suicide Squad after the widely-panned first film.

Elba can be seen next on the big screen in the upcoming Fast and the Furious spinoff film Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw starring Dwayne Johnson and Jason Statham. Additionally, Elba will also be appearing in the upcoming film version of the musical Cats. Elba is also returning for the fifth season of BBC America’s Luther which premieres in June of this year.
