‘It: Chapter Two’ Will be Heartbreaking

Pennywise is coming back to Derry in IT: Chapter Two, and while the film will surely make fans jump out of their seats, writer Gary Dauberman says it will also break some hearts.

He told Slashfilm,

“Like I said with the first one, it’s really this embarrassment of riches. It was trying to do your best job of taking what Stephen King wrote so beautifully all those years ago and try to translate it to the script page. For me it was just really fun to be able to revisit these characters and see what they’re up to 27 years later. There was a challenge trying to get all those character introductions and ‘here’s where we are so far’ which is fun to tackle. How can we find an elegant solution to introduce this many characters again to the audience?”

The team behind IT: Chapter Two has been very careful in what they say and what they share on social media in order to not give anything away – even the set photos that have made their way to the internet don’t tell much, and while some appear to reference key moments from the book, nothing on that end is confirmed. What’s known for sure is that the sequel will be scarier and more intense – and that “intensity” might not only be in terms of scares, but other emotions as well.

One of last year’s biggest hits was director Andy Muschietti’s theatrical take on Stephen King’s novel IT, which broke box office records, and gained praise not only for the performances of the young cast but also the way the story was adapted.

IT: Chapter One covered half the novel, following a group of kids self-named “The Losers Club” as they come face to face with an evil, shape-shifting entity whose preferred form is that of Pennywise, the dancing-clown.

Dauberman went on to say,

“In the first one, they’re all together in school so you see them in a bunch but 27 years later, I don’t think it’s a spoiler they’re sort of scattered all over the country,” Dauberman noted. “So we see pieces of who they’ve become which I think is really exciting. Then of course it was great to see them return to Derry.”

IT: Chapter Two will take the audience back to the fictional town of Derry, as the adult versions of the Losers take on this evil foe one more time and bring the story to a close.

“The ending I think will satisfy the audience and maybe break their hearts a little bit.” Dauberman concluded.

The first film dipped a toe into emotionality, when The Losers Club finally find young Georgie in It’s lair. They hope he’s alive, and he seems to be. In reality, he’s gone forever, and his likeness is a figment of their imagination, brought about by the evil magic within Pennywise.

When they realize that, it’s definitely heartbreaking enough. If the next film is taking that up a level, we can bet that it’s going to be pretty intense.
