‘It’ Had the Biggest Opening Weekend for a Horror Movie Ever

It floated its way to the top of the box office during its opening weekend, bringing in a monstrous $123.1 million from over 4,000 locations as of Monday morning. With these numbers, It officially had the third-largest opening weekend of 2017, falling behind Beauty and the Beast and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2. It doesn’t stop there, though. After an impressive preview opening on Thursday, that put it on track to beat pretty much all of the previous horror film records, it did just that making It the biggest opening for a horror movie ever and the second biggest opening for an R-rated film, coming in behind Deadpool’s insane $132.4 million in 2016.

Jeff Goldstein, distribution chief at Warner Bros, was clearly proud of the film’s success saying on Sunday, “There’s something really special about the story itself, the way the movie was made, and the marketing. The stars aligned on this, and we still have some room to grow for the weekend.” It still has a lot more money to make and people to scare as it heads into the coming weeks and the Halloween season, so we can expect to see it breaking even more records.

It was directed by Andy Muschietti from New Line and Warner Bros. Studios and followed a group of kids as they try to track down and defeat an evil clown named Pennywise terrorizing their town by stealing young children and currently holds an impressive 87% on Rotten Tomatoes. A sequel has already been announced that will follow the Loser’s Club as adults as they battle Pennywise once more.
