J.J. Abrams’ First Tweet Officially Kicks Off ‘Star Wars: Episode IX’ Filming

It’s official! Production and filming for the upcoming Star Wars: Episode IX has officially begun and direct J.J. Abrams creatively commemorated the occasion.

Abrams took to Twitter on Wednesday and sent his first ever tweet! He tweeted out a heartfelt tribute to the late, great Carrie Fisher as well as some endearing remarks about the start of production on Star Wars: Episode IX as well as a cryptic photo from behind the camera lens. Abrams said, “Bittersweet starting this next chapter without Carrie, but thanks to an extraordinary cast and crew, we are ready to go. Grateful for @rianjohnson and special thanks to George Lucas for creating this incredible world and beginning a story of which we are lucky to be a part.”

Check out his tweet below:

At first, the photo in Abrams’ tweet simply appears to be a camera shooting what we can presume to be the inside of one of the spaceships used in the Star Wars universe. Upon closer inspection, and if you look really, really closely at where the camera is pointing, you can make out what looks like John Boyega’s Finn in the middle left-hand section possibly sitting in the driver’s seat. If you look closer, you can also make out everyone’s favorite co-pilot, Chewbacca (played by Joonas Suotamo), next to him in the upper left-hand section of the photo.

Last Friday, casting for the upcoming film was officially announced. In addition to Boyega and Suotamo, Star Wars: Episode IX will star Daisy Ridley, Adam Driver, Oscar Isaac, Lupita Nyong’o, Domhnall Gleeson, Kelly Marie Tran, and Billie Lourd as well as newcomers Naomi Ackie and Richard E. Grant. Additionally, the film will see the return of iconic veteran Star Wars actors including Mark Hamill, Anthony Daniels, and Billy Dee Williams. The late Carrie Fisher will be incorporated into the film reprising her iconic role of Leia Organa using previously unreleased footage from Star Wars: The Force Awakens.

Star Wars: Episode IX has just begun filming in London’s Pinewood Studios and is expected to have an anticipated release day in December 2019.
