J K Rowling: Sorry I killed off Remus Lupin

Monday May 2 was the fictional anniversary of the “Battle of Hogwarts” and J.K. Rowling has made it a tradition now to mourn the deaths of those who gave their lives for the betterment of the wizarding world.

This year, she chose to mourn Remus Lupin, the werewolf wizard who died that night alongside his friends and beloved wife, Nymphadora
Tonks.

“Arthur lived, so Lupin had to die,” Rowling tweeted. “I’m sorry. I didn’t enjoy doing it.The only time my editor ever saw me cry was over the fate of Teddy,” Teddy is the now orphaned son of Lupin and Tonks. Rowling has said she grew too attached to Arthur to see him die and has noted him as “the only good father in the whole series.”

Lupin was one of Rowling’s favorite characters out of the entire series.

“Lupin’s condition of lycanthropy (being a werewolf) was a metaphor for those illnesses that carry a stigma, like HIV and AIDS…All kinds of superstitions seem to surround blood- borne conditions, probably due to taboos surrounding blood itself. The wizarding community is as prone to hysteria and prejudice as the Muggle one, and the character of Lupin gave me a chance to examine those attitudes.”

Rowling has confessed that she didn’t decide to kill Lupin off until she wrote “Order of the Phoenix,” and wanted Lupin and Tonks to die “as an echo of what happened to Harry just to show the absolute evil of what Voldemort’s doing.” Mirroring what Voldemort did to Lily and James.

Last year she mourned the death of Fred, this year, Lupin. Who should we honor next year?

Over the years, Rowling has apologized for many things, and even though they are greatly appreciated, an apology cannot fill the hole these characters have left in our hearts. These characters were real to us and we all lost loved ones at the battle. She has given us friends who have left lasting marks on our hearts. To me, that is nothing she needs to apologize for.

Even though I am sad they are gone, I am grateful to have known them at all.

Personally I like to think that Fred is still at Hogwarts training the newest batch of mischief makers and that Lupin and Tonks are watching over their son through his school days, guiding him along.

It’ll be nine years this July since the last book came out and I am still crying.
