James Corden and Emily Blunt Perform a Pop Musical Version of ‘Romeo and Juliet’

Not since Leonardo DiCarpio and Claire Danes in the 1996 Baz Luhrmann version has there been a more amazing, modernized rendition of the tragic love story of Romeo + Juliet.  Also, we’re pretty sure that never before has there been a version that has made us rock out so hard and sing along!  Leave it up to James Corden to bring us such a version.

Corden and The Late Late Show are live in London this week and he’s been pulling out all the stops to make this trip extra special.  For this particular sketch, Corden teamed up with Mary Poppins Returns star Emily Blunt in order to pull off an abridged version of wth William Shakespeare classic.  In order to spice things up a bit, they performed the classic story as a musical using modern day pop songs for the score.  As Corden notes in the introduction of the performance, they use 14 modern pop songs across seven different set scenes all in just one take with zero pressure.

In just a little over 6 minutes, the pair delightfully sings their way through the entire star-crossed lovers love story and it’s amazing how well some of the modern day songs fit so exceptionally well into the storyline.  Why hasn’t anyone else done this before?  The whole sketch is brilliant.

Corden and Blunt sing their way through Whitney Houston’s “I Wanna Dance With Somebody,” Bruno Mars’ “Just the Way You Are,” Katy Perry’s “Teenage Dream,” Adele’s “Hello,” Lionel Richie’s “Hello,” Carl Douglas’ “Kung Fu Fighting,” Ludacris’ “What’s Your Fantasy,” MAGIC!’s “Rude,” DJ Jazzy Jeff and The Fresh Prince’s “Parents Just Don’t Understand,” Britney Spears’ “Toxic,” Nazareth’s “Love Hurts,” Chumbawamba’s “Tubthumping,” Mariah Carey’s “Without You” and, finally, Carl Carlton’s “Everlasting Love.”

Seriously, did you ever think you would see a version of Romeo and Juliet that included a Ludacris song in it? We sure didn’t but, we LOVE this!  Check out the video below from Thursday night’s Late Late London Show with James Corden and Emily Blunt:
