James McAvoy won’t appear as Professor X in X Men Spinoff ‘The New Mutants’

The New Mutants is one of three new X-Men movies to be released in 2018 and we’ve just started getting confirmation on the first confirmed cast members for the film. So far, Anya Taylor-Joy and Maisie William are on board and James McAvoy and Nat Wolff aren’t on the cast list.

James McAvoy played a well received Professor X and he is confirmed for Dark Phoneix, his last contracted film. This could mean that he hasn’t worked out a deal to sign on for more films as the professor. It’s been pointed out that, if that’s the case, Professor X may not be a character we see more of, as Patrick Stewart said Logan was the last film he’d be playing the role in.

While these are all still rumors, there are some things about The New Mutants that have been confirmed.

Movie Web gave more information about the script and what characters we will see in the film; we have to say, we’re excited for this one.

‘The characters revealed were Magik, Wolfsbane, Dani Moonstar, Cannonball, Sunspot and Warlock. An unconfirmed rumor surfaced in March that claimed Game of Thrones star Maisie Williams will play Wolfsbane, a.k.a. Rahne Sinclair, with The Witch star Anya Taylor-Joy reportedly signing on to play Magik, a.k.a. Illya Rasputin, the younger sister of Colossus. That report also claimed that X-Men: Apocalypse star Alexandra Shipp will return as Storm, with Sophie Turner (Jean Grey), Tye Sheridan (Cyclops) and Kodi Smit-McPhee (Nightcrawler) also being eyed to return. The filmmaker added that he also brought in Scott Neustadter and Michael H. Weber to work on the script, which he doesn’t think will ever be fully finished until filming has wrapped.’

Also, with the script not being full finished until filming has wrapped…and fans enjoying James’ portrayal of Professor X so much, there are hopefuls who are holding out the belief that he’ll be added sooner than later.

New Mutants is set to begin production this summer in Montreal and will be released on April 13, 2018.
