Joaquin Phoenix’s ‘Joker’ Movie Does not Follow the Comics

October is creeping closer by the months, and many sources are coming forward with new images or news on the upcoming movie. Once the Joker movie, directed by Todd Phillips, was greenlit, a lot of speculation came forward about what this film would do storywise.

People believed for a while that the storyline would mostly follow Alan Moore‘s The Killing Joke. As a result, it shook up the fan base. Many people believe the Joker is so scary because we don’t know his past. While I agree with this on some extent, I also do believe directors should get the creative freedom to explore a character on screen. It seems that this will exactly be the case for Joker!

On Empire’s issue for August, you’ll get an exclusive look into the film, which according to Todd Phillips will be unique in its own way.

“We didn’t follow anything from the comic-books, which people are gonna be mad about. We just wrote our own version of where a guy like Joker might come from. That’s what was interesting to me. We’re not even doing Joker, but the story of becoming Joker. It’s about this man.” – Todd Phillips to Empire

Not a lot is known about the plot of the film, only that it’s a new sort of origin story on the famous villain, going by the name Arthur Fleck. What do you think? Do you like the idea of a whole new backstory? Let us know in the comments below.

Joker is directed by Todd Phillips and is produced by Bradley Cooper and Emma Tillinger Koskoff. The movie will star Joaquin Phoenix, Zazie Beetz, Robert De Niro, Marc Maron, and many more.

Joker will hit theatres on October 4, 2019. Check out the film’s first trailer HERE.
