Josh McDermitt Talks Losing Michael Cudlitz on ‘The Walking Dead’

With the 100th episode of The Walking Dead premiering in less than three weeks, the cast and crew are sitting down for interviews in a lead up to the big day. The 8th season kicks off on October 22nd and we’re getting an incredible look at the series through the eyes of some of our favorite actors and actresses.

Some of the interviews provide us with insight on past seasons while others preview what we can look forward to in the 100th episode and season 8 in its entirety. In addition, we’ve also heard what some of our favorite – and least favorite – scenes in the series meant to the cast and crew.

Most recently, Josh McDermitt was asked who his biggest loss was in the series and his response didn’t surprise us. In fact, it pulled at our heartstrings.

‘It would be Michael, you know. He’s one of my best friends and you know it’s coming and it comes and it still kind of hits you in a weird way. We talk all the time, we talk two or three times a week. Checking in on text, or phone, or whatever and in a weird way it feels like he hasn’t gone anywhere, but also, he doesn’t know what’s going on here so there’s less and less I’m able to talk to him about.’

He also said that, as he joined the series with Christian Serratos and Cudlitz, that the three of them had a special bond. That bond is what makes the series a bit difficult without him.

‘So, that missing piece … I think we showed up the same episode. Same with Christian Serratos, we have a bond, the three of us, that you know, that other people don’t have, it’s probably something that Sonequa Martin Green and Chad Coleman have because they showed up together. It’s things like that. It’s been difficult but this is also the nature of this business. We all take jobs all the time, we’re all journeyman and I know where he lives so I can go to his … He’s like ‘I told you not to come over. Just text only.’

While we miss Abraham for who he was as a character and Cudlitz for what he brought to the character and the series, we can’t help but think that if he hadn’t been one of Negan’s victims, things would be different for Eugene.

To see what’s next for Eugene, tune into The Walking Dead on October 22nd on AMC.
