Joss Whedon Announces Exit from ‘Batgirl’ Film

News broke today that the big screen debut for Batgirl is undergoing a major change. Joss Whedon told the Hollywood Reporter that he was stepping down from the role as writer and director, but for a good reason.

In March 2017, Whedon was brought on as the director for the Batgirl film. Fans were excited about the prospect of bringing Barbara Gordon to the big screen in the heroic way she deserves. However, it was announced today that Whedon has said goodbye to the project.

Whedon said that it took him some time to realize that he just didn’t really have a story there.

Batgirl is such an exciting project, and Warners/DC such collaborative and supportive partners, that it took me months to realize I really didn’t have a story. I’m grateful to Geoff and Toby and everyone who was so welcoming when I arrived, and so understanding when I…uh, is there a sexier word for ‘failed?’

Honestly, we think the bigger ‘fail’ would have been to try to create a story he wasn’t passionate about. Plus, this isn’t the end of the future of Batgirl’s journey to the big screen, and you never know who could pick up the torch now.
