Kate Beckinsale Returns to TV After 20 Years to Star in Amazon’s ‘The Widow’
Amazon is clearly not slowing down when it comes to original programming. Fresh off their huge announcement of a multi-season Lord of the Rings series deal, as well as James Gunn’s new Starsky and Hutch series and Orlando Bloom’s Carnival Row, Amazon just announced a new thriller starring Kate Beckinsale, which will mark her first TV gig in 20 years. She last starred in 1998’s Alice Through the Looking Glass (below).
The Widow will be an eight-episode drama series that follows Georgia Wells (Beckinsale), “who has cut herself off from her previous life and is no longer the woman she once was. After seeing her “late” husband on the news, she is pulled back to face the world and will stop at nothing until she gets the truth about her past.” The series will take place in the African Congo.
It will be written and executive produced by Harry and Jack Williams, who previously worked on the Emmy and Golden Globe-nominated Starz series The Missing.
“Kate Beckinsale is a brilliantly talented actress and we’re thrilled she’s joining us on this journey — we couldn’t imagine anyone more perfect for the role. The Widow is our most ambitious and cinematic piece to date and we can’t wait to bring the dark heart of the Congolese jungle to the screen,” the Williams brothers said in a statement.
While new to the Amazon original series world, Beckinsale is not new to Amazon. She recently starred in the Jane Austen adaptation Love & Friendship and The Only Living Boy in New York. which were both distributed by Amazon Studios.
“We are thrilled to continue our existing relationship with Kate Beckinsale on the heels of her incredible performances in Amazon Studios’ critically acclaimed films. Harry and Jack Williams have created a powerful story, which will be brought to life by one of the world’s most talented actresses, and we are excited to bring this thrilling series to Prime members around the world,” Brad Beale, Vice President, Worldwide TV Content Acquisition for Amazon Prime Video, added.
The Widow is set to start production later this year.

Having studied Media & Writing at James Madison University, I always knew that I wanted to do some type of creative writing, but being able to write about zombies, Starks, and superheroes on a daily basis for Fan Fest is my actual dream. While I probably shouldn’t be as proud as I am to be so similar to Nick Miller, I do hope to one day write my own “Pepperwood Chronicles’.
