Marvel Could Start Developing Fox Properties in the Next Six Months

Last month, Marvel Entertainment’s Kevin Feige sat down with Variety’s Playback podcast, to jam about the last ten years of Marvel flicks.  During the interview, Feige offered up this tidbit about the future of the Marvel Cinematic Universe: while they aren’t actively moving forward with their new “toys”, the outlook is good that they will start active development of the soon-to-be former Fox characters “in the first six months of next year”.

This is good news to Marvel fans, as there do not seem to be any plans for Phase 4 following Avengers: Endgame and Spider-Man: Far From Home later this year.  With the merger between Disney and Fox soon to be finalized, the influx of new characters should re-invigorate the Marvel Cinematic Universe, with several contracts expiring and the eleven year journey we all began back in 2008 coming to a close.

It also could signal the end of months of speculation about when we could see the Fox properties in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.  If Feige and crew really do start developing the Fox characters in, say, June, we could see pre-production start as soon as January 2020 on something X-Men related, Fantastic Four related, or Deadpool related.  Which means, in turn, that any of these properties could very well come out towards the end of 2020 or the beginning of 2021.

Marvel’s situation is very unusual, as Feige pointed out in his interview with Variety, as they don’t have all their characters under one roof.  Even with the acquisition of 21st Century Fox and all their properties, Marvel still doesn’t have the cinematic rights to Spider-Man or the Hulk, among others, though those two do appear in MCU films thanks to agreements with Sony and Universal.

Whenever the wheels start truly moving on this next iteration of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, one thing is for sure, the fans are the real winners here.  Yes, even the fans who think that Marvel can’t do justice to Deadpool.
