No show is perfect, not even AMC’s The Walking Dead. But, since Angela Kang’s takeover as show-runner in the ninth season, the writing has been stellar versus the previous seasons. Last night’s episode, “Open Your Eyes,” had a shocking twist at the end that resulted in the death of a fan favorite character.
We learned last night that Dante was in fact a Whisperer who is embedded and spying inside of Alexandria on our survivors. Dante was not only responsible for Saddiq’s fate on the show but, we also learned, he was responsible for forcing Saddiq to witness the deaths of Enid and the others who ended up with their heads on pikes.
What’s interesting though and potentially a huge plot hole is that Lydia, who grew up among the Whisperers did not recognize Dante. Why is this important? Well, previously, Lydia did recognize Gamma when she confronted Gamma outside of Alexandria. Given that Lydia is familiar with Gamma, and having been with the Whisperers since the beginning, it would be logical for her to know Dante.
How does something like this happen where Lydia is not familiar with someone like Dante? We don’t just mean Dante’s face, by the way. Clearly, Dante is a very unique character in the way he talks and carries himself, so this too should have been a clear indication to Lydia that Dante isn’t who he claimed to be.
OR, is the massive plot hole and unexplored part of the story that Lydia too is still on the side of Alpha and the Whisperers, knowing very well who Dante is and that he is spying for the Whisperers too?
Either way, this leaves something significant for the writers to explain, either intentional or unintentional, it has us asking a lot of questions now and wondering what will happen in the mid-season finale! We can’t wait to find out!
What do you think of this plot hole? Is it on purpose or something we’re going to learn more about real soon?
