Matt Reeves Offers An Update On His ‘Batman’ Film

With Aquaman swimming to the top of the box office and a sequel seemingly confirmed for the future, things have been incredibly quiet in Gotham City.

Matt Reeves, the director of Dawn of the Planet of the Apes and War for the Planet of the Apes, has decided to helm the upcoming Batman film. Reeves is currently writing the script for solo film and is set to direct it once filming commences. After months of uncertainty, Reeves has finally given fans an update on his film, known for now as, The Batman.

In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Reeves has said that the film will be a point of view driven film that he labels a “Noir Batman Tale”. He then adds:

“It’s told very squarely on his shoulders, and I hope it’s going to be a story that will be thrilling but also emotional. It’s more Batman in his detective mode than we’ve seen in the films. The comics have a history of that. He’s supposed to be the world’s greatest detective, and that’s not necessarily been a part of what the movies have been. I’d love this to be one where when we go on that journey of tracking down the criminals and trying to solve a crime, it’s going to allow his character to have an arc so that he can go through a transformation.”

It seems that Reeves’ film will focus very much on the detective aspect of The Dark Knight. We could finally see how Batman solves crimes and how he uses his intellect and various tools to do so. In addition to revealing more about the story itself, Reeves has also said that the film will feature a “Rogues Gallery” meaning that we could see multiple villains appear. Maybe The Riddler, Penguin, or other villains like Mad-Hatter or Hush (a Hush story would be amazing).

While the casting process is set to start shortly, according to Reeves, it is still unknown whether Ben Affleck will don the cowl once again. My personal opinion is that I loved what Ben and Zack did with the role and would absolutely love to see him return as The Caped Crusader.

It looks as though the solo film is still quite far away, which may be a good thing considering the changes that Warner Bros have made to the DC Universe. Reeves has confirmed that he is hoping the film will be ready for release in 2021.
