Michael Cudlitz on Mysterious ‘The Walking Dead’ X’s: “We will find out later.”

Caution: This post may contain spoilers from episode 9×07 of The Walking Dead entitled, “Stradivarious”

Last week’s episode of The Walking Dead was directed by former cast member Michael Cudlitz, who played Abraham on the show from season 4 until the first episode of season 7, when Negan brutally kills the brawney, mustache dawning, red haired Army sergeant.

He is now giving his input on of the episode’s biggest mysteries.

The camera pans over a scar in the shape of a large X on Daryl’s back in the episode, and in the previous episode we see that Michonne has it as well.

We have no idea what the X’s could mean, but theories are flying. Cudlitz gave his input to Insider last week,

“Where we’re dealing with Michonne, where she has separated herself from the Hilltop group, and sort of isolated herself with just Alexandria, we’re not exactly sure why. We will find out later. A lot of it’s tied to the ‘X’ that we see on her back, that we just revealed on Michonne’s back. Now we see it on Daryl’s back.”

Cudlitz says we’ll be glad once we know what it meant. Perhaps it has something to do with Michonne not being welcomed to Hilltop so warmly on the preview for the mid-season finale. Whatever they are, it seems the dust has settled, but we are still curious.

“The audience is going to want to know what that’s about, They’re going to find out what that’s about, but that is something that connects them all, even though they’re all separated right now, we’re going to find out why.” Says Cudlitz.

He continues,

“We’re going to find out why Michonne had distance with Maggie when last we saw [her], she didn’t,” Cudlitz said. “I mean, they had conflict over the Negan thing, but that was resolved. She stepped aside. She let Maggie tell that story, and carry that story off the way that she had to, because she knew she had to. So there’s no conflict left there, really. They actually agreed.”

So, perhaps Maggie has this X mark as well.

The Walking Dead airs its mid-season finale on Sunday at 9 PM ET on AMC and will return for the second half of season 9 in the new year, and you can catch Michael Cudlitz on The Kids Are Alright on Tuesday nights on ABC.
