Netflix to Develop ‘The Chronicles of Narnia’ Films and Series

Are you ready to head back to Narnia? Netflix is setting out to take viewers on a journey back to the magical land beyond the wardrobe as the streaming service has announced its plans to create a new set of films based on the novel series.

The announcement was made via The Chronicles of Narnia official Facebook page and said that Netflix will be developing series and films based on classic stories from across the Narnia universe under the terms of a multi-year deal between the streaming service and The C.S. Lewis Company.

The newly developing series and films will be Netflix productions with Mark Gordon of Entertainment One (eOne) executive producing alongside Douglas Gresham and Vincent Siber. This marks the first time that the rights to all seven novels in the book series have been held by the same company.

Ted Sarandos, Chief Content Officer at Netflix said, “C.S. Lewis’ beloved Chronicles of Narnia stories have resonated with generations of readers around the world. Families have fallen in love with characters like Aslan and the entire world of Narnia, and we’re thrilled to be their home for years to come.

Douglas Gresham, stepson of C.S. Lewis said, “It is wonderful to know that folks from all over are looking forward to seeing more of Narnia and that the advances in production and distribution technology have made it possible for us to make Narnian adventures come to life all over the world. Netflix seems to be the very best medium with which to achieve this aim, and I am looking forward to working with them towards this goal.”

There’s no word yet on exactly how many films or projects Netflix will produce, but eOne’s President and Chief Content Officer, Film & Television Mark Gordon has said, “Narnia is one of those rare properties that spans multiple generations and geographies. eOne and I are excited to be collaborating with The C.S. Lewis Company and Netflix who have the capacity to translate the Narnia universe into both stellar feature-length and episodic programming. We cannot wait to get started on the multiple productions we hope to undertake.”

The Chronicles of Narnia books are hugely popular selling over 100 million copies. The novels have been translated into more than 47 languages and have previously been adapted into films by Disney.
