Netflix Just Dethroned HBO With the Most Emmy Nominations
And just like that, Netflix is the reigning king of Emmy nominations! The streaming service just took the top spot from HBO for the most Emmy nominations with Netflix walking away with a whopping 112 nominations as opposed to HBO’s 108. The numbers are quite surprising considering that HBO’s television juggernaut Game of Thrones was eligible this year, but alas they couldn’t quite touch Netflix’s phenomenal year of original programming. NBC came in third place with 78 nominations and FX rounded it out fourth with 50, thanks to Ryan Murphy’s American Horror Story: Cult and American Crime Story: The Assassination of Gianni Versace.

Netflix’s period drama The Crown managed to walk away with 13 nominations including Best Drama and Best Actress for Claire Foy. Next was Stranger Things with 12 nominations including Supporting nominations for Millie Bobby Brown and David Harbour. Black Mirror received 7 nominations including a surprise nomination for Jesse Plemons in “USS Callister”. Glow, Godless, Ozark, and Anthony Bourdain: Parts Unkown all walked away with numerous nominations as well.
HBO didn’t take the loss quietly. Even though they may not have come out on top nomination wise, Game of Thrones still walked away with the most nominations having earned 22. In fact, Peter Dinklage broke the record in the supporting actor category. They released a statement of their own:

It’s been a long time coming for Netflix who have had an impressive foot in the game since House of Cards debuted in 2013. Since then the streaming giant has had more and more contenders and frontrunners and showed no signs of slowing down. Of course, the true test of Netflix vs. HBO will come on Septemeber 17th when the two networks battle it out at the 70th Annual Emmy Awards!
