New Report Suggests ‘Daredevil’ was Canceled Despite Being Netflix’s Fourth Biggest Show

It’s been one week since Netflix announced the surprising cancelation of its fan-favorite series Marvel’s Daredevil, and viewers are still trying to understand the reason behind it. Now, it looks like we can confidently cross off ratings and viewership from the potential causes of cancelation.

Daredevil was arguably one of Netflix’s best original series, and most certainly at the top of the list when it came to their Marvel programming. As it turns out, a new report suggests that the series was actually in the top four most-watched Netflix shows last week, prior to its cancelation.

According to Parrot Analytics, which claims to accurately display viewership for streaming platforms, last week’s top four included, in order, Narcos: Mexico in the top spot (which just earned itself a season 2 renewal), The Chilling Adventures of SabrinaStranger Things, and then Daredevil. Entertainment Weekly points out that Daredevil‘s place in the top four last week is not due to a surge of viewership after the cancelation was announced. According to the same report, the viewership only grew approximately 2% after Thursday’s shocking cancelation.

Fans of Marvel’s Daredevil were stunned to learn that the series had been canceled by Netflix after a successful three season. Though the series will no longer air on the Netflix streaming platform, it looks like we haven’t seen the last of Matt Murdock and his crew.

Shortly after the cancelation announcement was made, Marvel released a statement saying:

[row]“Marvel is extremely grateful to the huge audience that loved Marvel’s Daredevil. From the moment of young Matt’s first act of heroism to the birth of Page, Murdock, & Nelson, it has been an unbelievable journey. We are incredibly proud of the amazing showrunners and writers starting with Drew Goddard and Steven DeKnight, Marco Ramirez and Doug Petrie and Erik Oleson, Charlie Cox, Deborah Ann Woll, Elden Henson, Vincent D’Onofrio and our casts who brought our characters to life with such excellence, and every one of the fantastic crews in NYC. We look forward to more adventures with the Man without Fear in the future.”[/row]

Whether or not this means the show will be moving to Disney’s new streaming platform, Disney+, or perhaps there’s another fate in mind for the characters, Marvel’s interest in future plans for the series make sense given the suggested report of its popularity. Here’s hoping we get a lot more Daredevil in the future.
