Nina Dobrev Possibly Returning to Vampire Diaries?

I guess the rumors are true!  The official announcement that season 8 of The Vampire Diaries will be its last was made at last week’s San Diego Comic Con (SDCC) panel. What are we going to do without the Salvatore vampire brothers, played by Ian Somerhalder and Paul Wesley?

Although the show is ending, there is a small silver lining – Elena Gilbert played by Nina Dobrev could be back to give fans the closure they need.  Did anyone else shed tear for Damon Salvatore, when Elena was put into a deep sleep? Those two characters were great together! The fact that Elena was not outright killed kept the window open, and I am excited that the possibility of a reunion is now more of a reality.

In the season 7 finale of “Gods and Monsters”, we got a brief return of Elena by way of her voice in the cave which was calling out to Damon.  This was not taken from old audio, but in fact, it was newly recorded.  Dobrev was able to carve some time out of her schedule to record the new audio, so the fact that she still has close ties to the show is promising.  Executive producer, Julie Plec hinted at SDCC that they would try and work something out with Dobrev. According to Plec, “Friendship promises were made and now we’ll see if we can deliver on them.”

Let’s all cross our fingers that they can make it work, because frankly these characters have been through a lot and it would be comforting to see thing end on a happier note.  The early announcement has hopefully allowed writers to end the series in a way that give fans a proper goodbye to characters we have grown to love.
