Nintendo to Re-Release The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword

It’s been more than five hundred days since the last official Nintendo Direct, which meant that fan expectations were running at an all time high leading up to Nintendo’s big announcements on Wednesday. Rumors of what may appear during the Direct ran the gambit from new playable Smash characters to an oft-pined for Legend of Zelda HD Collection.

While Nintendo didn’t reveal an HD Collection, they certainly had something up their sleeves in the form of an HD re-release of the 2011 Wii U Zelda installment, The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword, which hits shelves on July 16, 2021.

The original Wii U game launched during the era of motion controls, which resulted in much flicking and swishing of Wii remotes during combat. Those who enjoyed this method of combat should be pleased to know that Nintendo has preserved the original gameplay in it’s Switch re-release, this time making good use of the Joy-Con motion capabilities. For those who were less than thrilled with the heavy emphasis on motion tactics, Nintendo has added a second mode in which movement can be accomplished solely by button control.

Along with the game announcement, Nintendo revealed a limited time set of Skyward Sword themed Joy-Con, to launch separately this summer, alongside the release of the game.

While news of the HD release of The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword is certainly a move fans had been hoping for, it isn’t entirely the reveal that had once been rumored. Given that the franchise is celebrating its 35th anniversary, and considering the treatment given to the Mario franchise with the release of it’s HD collection last Fall, it didn’t seem too far-fetched that an HD collection of Zelda series’ 3D installments could be in the pipeline. While the idea of an HD collection has not been entirely pushed outside the realm of possibility, it doesn’t appear that such an installment will be revealed anytime soon.

In other news, Nintendo also shed some light on when we may hear more on the sequel to The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, stating that development has thus far been smooth, and promising more news later in the year.
