‘Pokemon Sword And Shield’ Announced At The Pokemon Direct

Well Nintendo, we get no info from you at all, then you shower us with gaming knowledge. Nintendo announced yesterday we would be getting a Pokémon Direct just in time for Pokémon day. I just watched the entire 7 minute presentation, and I can tell you they did not disappoint when it comes to giving us a proper announcement on what is coming next for the series. In fact, that is all the information we got!

Lets jump right in with the video footage!

As I am sure you watched the video, let’s break down everything we learned today.

The new games are titled Pokémon Sword and Pokémon Shield. From what the footage has shown, it looks like we are getting a similar experience to what we saw in Pokémon Let’s Go Pikachu and Eevee, at least when it comes to the graphics. Classic fighting a Pokémon before catching it was one of the first things shown, so it is easy to tell Nintendo wanted it out there so Pokémon fans would be invested in the last east entry. While it was not a terrible thing, many hardcore fans moaned the Pokémon Go catching the Lets Go variation included.

We are as expected going to a new region and encountering new Pokémon. The new region is named the Galar region. The trailer shows many different environments you will be trekking through on your quest to be Pokémon champion. There are the sweeping hills and grass of the country, the bustling streets of the city, the dark corridors of mine shafts, and snow covered roads. All the detail is so incredible, it is nice to see the upgrade from Nintendo bringing the series to the Switch. We also saw arenas in the trailer, and what their function will be has yet to be seen. Multiplayer? Story content? Cannot wait to see.

We are moving forward into generation eight with three new starters as per usual. There is a fire rabbit known as Scorbunny, a cute little water lizard named Sobble, and a leaf chimp known as Grookey. While it sounds like the Pokémon Company has absolutely ran out of names, all three starters look amazing. While I thought I may have seen another new Pokémon or two in the trailer, I am also not as versed in the gyms and they could have just been new to me. We did see a couple of old gen Pokémon however, like Pikachu and Tyrannitar.

All and all we had a pretty awesome Nintendo Direct, and Nintendo said that is not it for Pokémon news for 2019! What was your favorite announcement? What starter do you plan to use? Tell us about it in the comments below!

Pokémon Sword and Shield are coming in late 2019 and will be available exclusively on the Nintendo Switch.
