‘Riverdale’ and ‘Chilling Adventures of Sabrina’ Won’t Be Crossing Over

Ever since the news that the Chilling Adventures of Sabrina would be adapted into a series came out, fans have been wondering if the citizens of Riverdale would ever find themselves crossing over into Sabrina Spellman’s town of Greendale. The two shows will technically take place in the same universe, and Riverdale has mentioned Greendale before as well, but seeing that the spinoff will be setting up shop at Netflix as opposed to The CW, a crossover had been pretty up in the air until now.

The CW’s President Mark Pedowitz said earlier this week at the Television Critics Association summer press tour that “there will be no cross connection” between the two series mainly due to them being on separate networks.

[row]”Sabrina was originally, as you know, in development here, but the studio came to us — Peter came to me actually — and said, ‘We have a two-year commitment from Netflix.’ And I said, ‘Go with [Netflix], it’s the right thing to do for your business.’”[/row]

Jon Goldwater, CEO of Archie Comics and an executive producer on Riverdale and Sabrina, echoed Pedowitz’s comments earlier this year as well.

[row]Right now, we’re not thinking about that. They’re two separate entities for right now.[/row]

It would make sense for the two series to not crossover any time soon so that Sabrina can build their own audience and story without having to blend the two worlds. Riverdale has often leaned toward the campy and extremely over-dramatic storylines and Sabrina may want to distance itself from that in the early seasons. Not to mention, Riverdale hasn’t mentioned or incorporated any supernatural storylines into their universe yet, so until they did that, having Sabrina Spellman & Co. involved wouldn’t be a natural fit.

Starring Mad Men’s Kiernan Shipka, The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina puts a darker twist on the iconic teenage witch and follows Sabrina as she struggles to balance being both a half-witch/half-human to protect the ones she loves from the dangers lurking in her town of Glendale. In addition, the series also stars Ross Lynch as Harvey Finkle, Lucy Davis as Aunt Hilda, Miranda Otto as Aunt Zelda, Jaz Sinclair as Sabrina’s friend Rosalind Walker, and Tati Gabrielle as her rival Prudence.

Netflix announced during it’s TCA panel last week that Sabrina would be getting a delightfully perfect Halloween premiere date, with season 1 dropping on October 26th!
