‘Riverdale’ Recap “Chapter 40: The Great Escape”

Archie and Joaquin’s plan to escape was unsuccessful. Veronica hears about this and enlists Elio’s help. He brings her to one of Archie’s underground fights. She suggests another prison break, scheduled for after his next fight. Everyone is ready to help.

Betty tells Jughead about her mother’s confession, but he’s not listening. He’s been playing the game for so long that it’s messing with his head. Jughead reveals his suspicions that he thinks the killer has been playing for a lot longer than the Midnight Club, so he wants to become the game master to catch the game master. He even turns Archie’s big escape into a G&G campaign.

The day of his fight, Archie finds out that this is going to be his final fight. He’s supposed to lose against the resurrected Mad Dog. Joaquin betrays Archie (with a kiss) by stabbing him before the fight. Joaquin mentions that he had to stab him in order to ascend.

Mad Dog, mid-fight, agrees to help him escape. The plan goes off without a hitch and he’s out!

Kevin, Reggie, and Josie join in the G&G mystery. The mystery is bigger than anyone imagined. Archie’s burn is the G&G rune for sacrifice and the Warden called him the Red Paladin… meaning more people are connected to this than just the Midnight Club and the subsequent generation. The Warden was ordered to kill the Red Paladin and poisons himself when he fails. Joaquin is wrapped up in this too, but he’s MIA.

I love how the G&G campaign mirrored the real-life action. I agree with Betty, she played an active role in helping Archie escape, Jughead just played pretend in a bunker. I understand Jughead’s dedication to the cause, but I’m worried about him. I enjoyed this episode so much, it furthered the mystery and even though I don’t want to risk my life playing the game, I need to know what happens next! We’ll have to wait until after Thanksgiving, though. See you in two weeks!
