Sam Smith’s ‘Too Good at Goodbyes’ Video Highlights a Generation Scorned by Love

When Sam Smith took to social media to announce his first single after a long hiatus, fans everywhere were absolutely thrilled. Not only is his voice so incredible that it’s hard to put into words, his songs are written with an honesty and vulnerability that we can relate to in the purest way.

The single, ‘Too Good at Goodbyes’ surpassed our expectations the moment we heard it. Sam sings about being made tough by a love because it always ends in goodbyes. At first, he was hurt and allowed himself to feel that pain but now, it doesn’t surprise him when his lover causes him pain. Instead, there are fewer tears, less pain, and a much less intense connection.

The video only made the song that much more real. Sam sings into the camera with a vulnerability that we spoke of earlier but it’s laced with a bite this time. One that shows that he’s stronger, even if it happened in a way that came from deep pain. It also highlights what happens so frequently now in relationships with young adults today.

There are these invisible walls built, suits of armor hidden beneath thin layers of skin. While we appear to be embracing love, we’re usually just waiting for the impact of the next heartache. We grow attached to people who hurt us because at least we know what to expect, and in the end, the love lost only gives us a thicker exterior.

The song was penned after an emotional time in his life, one which left him heartbroken in a way he hadn’t been before. He said, in an interview, that he couldn’t even write for two months at the time. His ‘people’ had to force him back in the studio to write again, and while we aren’t glad he was hurt – we’re glad he was able to get that pain off of his chest.
