‘Sons of Anarchy’ Characters Will Appear in Flashbacks on ‘Mayans MC’

In just under a month, the Mayans MC crew will be hitting the road with its series premiere on FX.  Sons of Anarchy fans are pumped for this new look into the Kurt Sutter created motorcycle club world, and as it turns out, Sutter may have some extra special surprises in store for them as well.

During the FX Hall H panel last month at San Diego Comic-Con, Sutter confirmed that the Sons series would intersect with the new Mayans MC series in some way. You can check out the video of Sutter’s answer below.

Exactly how the two series will intersect wasn’t address at the time, however, after last week’s Television’s Critics Association press tour, we now have a better idea.

First of all, Sutter revealed that Sons star and his beloved wife, Katy Sagal will appear in the upcoming Mayans MC series premiere, according to Entertainment Weekly. Sagal will reprise her role as Gemma Teller Morrow in a flashback to eight years prior to the Mayans MC timeline. Sutter went on to explain that the two series take place within the same world, just different timelines, so we will likely see more Sons characters but in flashbacks or memories. Sutter said, “It’s a flashback to eight years ago and a way of letting us know that he’s in Stockton where the two worlds will collide, at least in memory.”

We’ve already seen the new show pay tribute to the late Jax Teller, but does that mean the Sons characters will be prevalent in the new series? Speaking directly about incorporating the Sons story into the Mayan story, Sutter said, “I don’t want to mess with that mythology. That mythology can live in imagination. But flashbacks wouldn’t be stepping on what is happening now.”

Additionally, Sutter revealed that he hasn’t abandoned all hope just yet on the possibility of a prequel, something which fans have been desperately wanting for years now. He explained, “I love the idea of doing the first 10 of a prequel. It would be a 10-off. I’ll try to find a way to introduce that during the course of the Mayans.”

Mayans MC is set to take place after the events which occurred in the Sons of Anarchy finale and the death of Jax Teller. We will be seeing the post-Jax Teller world from the perspective of the rival motorcycle club, The Mayans. The series will follow prospect EZ Reyes (played by JD Pardo) through his struggles and desire for revenge against the drug cartel while attempting to earn the respect from the women he loves. The series will be directed by Norberto Barba (Grimm, The Strain, Preacher) who is also acting as executive producer.

Mayans MC will be hitting the road on FX premiering September 4th at 10 PM EST!
