‘Suicide Squad’: Review

The good people at DC Comics and Warner Brothers really, really, wanted to get the DC Cinematic Universe off on the right foot. For the most part, everything they showed us for Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice seemed like it was destined for greatness. We really, really, wanted to love this movie. So, it was with pure excitement that I went opening weekend to see it. Even got decent seats.

And they really, really, tried.

There were part of the movie that I liked, but the biggest flaw of Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice was that they put too much plot in it. It was apparent that they wanted to “catch up” with Marvel by skipping the solo stories and go right into this big epic movies with bigger than life characters. Overall though, the movie was good enough to get a 6/10 from me (I’ll eventually want the Ultimate Edition cut of the movie). But I, and I am sure many other fans felt we should not worry, because the Suicide Squad trailers looked awesome. Thankfully, I had the opportunity to attend the world premiere this past Monday at the Beacon Theater in New York City. The director came out and introduced the movie (and yes, I heard the expletive heard around the comic book and movie industry), and then the cast came out to introduce the movie. Then the movie started.

It was really, really, good.

Starring Viola Davis (Amanda Waller), Will Smith (Deadshot), Margot Robbie (Harley Quinn) and Jared Leto (The Joker) and many others, Suicide Squad moves like a roller coaster and you enjoy every moment of it. You know the plot: something bad happens, and Amanda Waller wants to assemble a task force of some bad people who she thinks can do some good. Yes, there are points in the movie that left me a little confused and perplexed, and wondering why certain characters are together (hint: it is not The Joker and Harley Quinn). But the director David Ayers (“Fury”) gives us a visually beautiful film with a story that moves so fast and coherently (for the most part) that you do not care. Comic book fans will also enjoy the cameos from Batman, the mid-credit scene at the end of the movie, and a couple of winks to some famous comic book moments/characters peppered throughout the movie.

Others who have seen this movie and have written or are writing their reviews might say it will hurt you really, really, bad.

My response: With Suicide Squad getting 4 out of 5 stars from me, I guess I’m just a sucker for pain, puddin’!
