‘Supergirl’ Movie in the Works

Kara Danvers might soon be flying onto the big screen! Warner Bros. and DC Entertainment have their sights set on their next superhero film subject, Supergirl. According to Deadline, DC and Warner Bros. have signed on with The Clover Field Paradox and 22 Jump Street writer Oren Uziel to pen the script for a brand new Supergirl movie.

The titular character is currently featured in a hugely successful show on the CW starring Melissa Benoist. The series is set to begin its fourth season this fall. Deadline’s report says that Benoist will not be taking on the cinematic version of the role, though the film is expected to take on the tone of the CW series rather than the darker sided ton of other DCEU films such as Batman V Superman.

Supergirl will be in great company joining the massively successful Wonder Woman as DC’s second female-led superhero blockbuster. The film is still in the very early stages of development, so it’s too soon for any casting or creative credits to be announced, however, as with Wonder Woman, the upcoming film is expected to host a female director.

The character was originally created in 1959 by Otto Binder and illustrator Al Plastino. The superheroine named Kara Zor-El is the teenage cousin of Superman and hails from Argo City, a small piece of Krypton which survived the planets devastating destruction. Kara was eventually sent to Earth by her parents prior to Argo City being destroyed. There, she was raised by her cousin, Kal-EL (aka. Superman).

Supergirl is the latest film announcement from DC. Up next for the studio is the highly-anticipated Aquaman starring Jason Momoa which will premiere this December followed by the seemingly light-hearted Shazam! starring Zachary Levi which is set to premiere in 2019. Both films just dropped their very first trailers at San Diego Comic-Con and received rave reviews so far from fans. Though the Aquaman trailer was expected, Shazam! was a complete and total surprise for fans. Also in the works at DC is the highly-anticipated sequel Wonder Woman 1984 and the upcoming Todd Phillips Joker film starring Joaquin Phoenix.
