‘Supernatural’ Recap: ‘Proverbs 17:3’

Last week on Supernatural, Chuck laid the groundwork by letting Becky in on a plan to write the demise of the Winchesters.  An ending that no fan will accept or like for the matter.  However, considering this is the final season I refuse to think that the writers of the show would do that to us.  Please do not give us a Dexter-like series finale.  Ahem. By providing the groundwork in “Atomic Monsters” though, fans should have known that “Proverbs 17:3” was ultimately straight from the pages of Chuck.

“Proverbs 17:3” opens on an annual camping trip between three college friends in Black Forest, Colorado. While Ashley hears something in the forest, the others disregard her fear. To prove a point their friend Julie goes outside to get more rum. Soon thereafter we hear screaming as the other friend with a job after graduation sticks her head out of the tent to investigate. Once we see the other friend grabbed from the tent upon attempting to zip it up we know it’s more than merely a really big deer.

We immediately cut to Sam and Dean in the bunker. Much to no avail, Sam has been attempting to contact Cas. His thoughts are broken upon Dean’s arrival and another hilarious interaction with Dean trying ghost pepper jerky. As he exits to leave, fans know we have entered another one of Sam’s nightmares. This time he is sitting at the table in the bunker a la when he was Lucifer. Dean has the colt and he asks for forgiveness as he shoots Sam in the head. He comes back to life with ease because Sam is no longer Sam.  He’s Lucifer.

Waking up from yet another horrific dream sequence, Sam still refrains from telling Dean what is going on. Instead, they make their way to the sheriff’s station in Black Forest. Sheriff Dignan (Rachel Hayward) does not believe these attacks were by a mountain lion. Sam asks if she thinks a human is behind these attacks, she remarks if that is the case then whoever is a monster. The sheriff tells them about Ashley surviving the attacks and the terror of running through the forest to get away all comes back.  The two immediately go to see her in the hospital to see if they can attain some information to stop this from happening once more.

Upon arrival Ashley seems to hesitate to give them any information until Sam goes into the hallway with the doctor. Dean provides her comfort by telling her she can tell them anything. They’ve heard worse. They’ve seen weirder. Ashley reveals that the thing that attacked her and her friends had fangs and claws. However, the night she was attacked, as Sam points out, it wasn’t a full moon. Dean thinks they are now dealing with a true blood werewolf. Upon looking back into the room Ashley is tears that reads like a blend of pure terror and a panic attack. The good thing is she has the Winchesters on her side. Two people who have no problem keeping their promise to keep her safe.

After leaving the hospital they drive deep into the words. Getting out of the car, they go to Andy’s (Markian Tarasiuk) home with his brother Josh (Luke Camilleri). Once Andy comes to the door, Josh immediately resists giving them any information. While at the cabin, Dean receives a call from Ashley. As soon as Sam and Dean leave, Josh becomes angry at his brother Andy. Their dad has died and they have been hunting. Andy never wanted to hunt in the first place, so Josh says they are going to stop. There is something far more sinister about the situation than not.

Dean and Sam take Ashley back to their hotel room. They then agree to stay with her until she falls asleep. As the brothers arrive at the hotel, Andy still has doubts about committing Ashley’s murder. He also points out to Josh that Dean and Sam are there as well. The talk she has with Dean is one of the most interesting of the series. Upon asking him if he ever wanted to do anything else, he feels he’s right where he should be. She further goes on about how great it would be if everything was predestined for us. Dean knows that isn’t all it’s cracked up to be.

They manage to take Ashley while Dean is sleeping. They take her back to the cabin to kill her, but Dean and Sam come in to save the day. As they attempt to leave the cabin, Josh and Andy attack them. They manage to get the upper hand of the Winchesters, but Andy turns on his brother in the heat of the moment. Instead of shooting Sam, who he points the gun at for a long time, he shoots Josh. After killing his brother, he then kills himself. As Dean tries to lead Ashley out of the cabin, she falls back onto the antlers and dies as well.

As viewers sit in shock, she begins to talk. Has the Necronomicon entered the picture somehow? No. While the show leads viewers to believe the Winchesters are helping Ashley the entire time, they have helped Lilith this entire time. She reveals that Chuck resurrected her and sent her there to attain the equalizer gun used in last season. As Sam is knocked unconscious, Dean promises to take Lilith to the gun. He will not have anything to happen to his brother.

In his dream this time, he is fighting Dean who throws him off the balcony and he suddenly has the mark of Cain again. Dean has no control as he uses the blade to stab Sam and leave him for dead. When he wakes up, he discovers that Dean has left him there, but finds the brother’s truck. Lilith reveals that God’s ultimate plan is to have one brother kill the other. That is why Josh and Andy died the way they did. Foreshadowing.

When they arrive back at the hotel room, Sam comes into the room and shoots Lilith. As she tries to move Sam tells her they have upgraded to devil trap bullets. Pulling out the knife he says that he has killed her once and he will have no problem killing her again. She reminds him that the only reason he killed her before is that she let them. Upon removing the bullet from her head with her powers, she freezes them in the parking lot and steals the gun from the glove compartment.

Without a second thought, she melts the gun and says that she will see them soon. Sam continues trying to call Cas, but he still is not picking up the phone. Dean sits down at the table that Sam is sitting on. God was supposed to be gone. The nightmares he has been seeing are the various endings that Chuck has written for the brothers. Dean doesn’t know what else to do at this point. Sam insists that they can fight though as Dean asks one very important question. “How the hell are we supposed to fight God?”
