‘The Big Bang Theory’ series finale to air May 16

An era is coming to an end, The Big Bang Theory has set its finale date, May 16, but that’s not all. The final episode will be an hour long!

There’s no word yet on how the series will end, but everyone seems to have the same idea: fix that damn elevator!

“That’s one of my wishes for the final episode,” says Jim Parsons (Sheldon). “The elevator gets fixed, at least for a minute, and then we all get stuck in it.”

Kaley Cuoco (Penny) adds “It would be a great show ending for me!”

Chuck Lorre, along with the rest of the cast, is sad to see the show end. “We have a general idea of what we are aiming for with May and the finale,” the sitcom creator said. “These days there’s a lot of melancholy in the background at all times. It’s been a 12-year project that has been really just a joy. It’s going to be very, very sad to let it go.”

Johnny Galecki (Leonard) has called this experience “surreal” and hopes that the finale gets emotional because “none of us are going to be able to keep from crying during the last taping. We’ve got to justify it in the writing somehow.”

Mayim Bialik (Amy) even opened up on YouTube about the grief that accompanies leaving a sitcom behind. “All things must end, even the good things must end,” she added. “I have to be in acceptance of what is instead of lamenting what was and fearing what’s next.”

With the series ending, there is good news on the horizon. Young Sheldon, BBT’s spinoff featuring Sheldon, has been renewed for a 3rd and 4th season and CBS Entertainment president Kelly Kahl has hinted that another spinoff may be in the works.

The BBT series finale will air May 16 at 8 p.m.
