‘The Mind of Jake Paul’: First 2 Episodes Review

A deep breath that is what is needed when it comes to watching the first three parts to Shane Dawson’s docuseries on YouTube: The Mind of Jake Paul. YouTube personality Shane Dawson promised fans that he would deliver an eight part series that they had been wanting to see and would not regret waiting on and well, deliver he has! On September 25, Shane released part one of his eight part series documenting his view on the life and mind of fellow YouTube personality Jake Paul and it was welcomed with open arms. Dawson even tweeted out a note to fans as a preemptive, “Sorry, not sorry” PSA about the series. Fans seemed to respond well by not responding with hate or dislike at the finished product however, this would not be the case for parts two and three.

Two days later on September 27, Shane released part two of his series titled, The Dark Side of Jake Paul and this is where the crazy ride not only through the mind of Jake Paul but through the mind of Shane Dawson occurred as well. The second part of Dawson’s series approached a topic that can be viewed as a sensitive topic and the execution in filming this part was really not up to par. The second part visited the topic of mental health-specifically, sociopathy. Shane does do the correct thing by approaching the topic in the presence of a licensed professional who is familiar with the character type and such but the final editing of the piece just threw everyone around the internet into an offended frenzy.

With multiple tweets and even reaction videos letting Dawson know that he filmed and edited together a piece that plays off as comedic yet, paints anyone suffering from what sociopathy is more formally known as, antisocial personality disorder, as a monster. Personally, I do not think that Shane was attempting to have the second part be intense, dramatic, comedic or disrespectful to anyone with a mental health diagnosis the issue is. Shane is in new territory all together with this series subject matter and he is learning how to navigate these waters when it comes to filming and editing. I say it was a beginner’s fluke that Shane quickly realized what the second part how come out to look like and quickly went to issue an apology.

As anyone knows, nothing that is put online is met without some controversy, however, I believe that in order to call a conservatory what it is, we need to see the entire series as a whole. Shane should honestly release the entire eight part series as one big “season” and let the viewers get a taste for everything all at once, as it should be viewed. I will be keeping on top of the series as Shane releases each installment which should be on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays until all eight parts are released. If you haven’t caught the series yet, I would recommend going to view the first few episodes and see what you think yourself.
