‘The Passage’ Finally Gets a Series Order at Fox

After nearly ten years of trying, it looks like the wildly popular Justin Cronin book trilogy The Passage will finally be making its way to the screen on Fox. The Passage first found its way to Hollywood when the film rights were purchased in 2007 (before the book was even published) with hopes be a trilogy directed by Matt Reeves. However, it was later decided that the story was better suited for a series and a pilot was shot for Fox last year. Again, that did not quite pan out and the network ultimately passed. Then in 2018, Fox decided to give the pilot another shot with a new script, director, and some recasting – and that’s when they finally found their winner. The revamped Passage is now the first Fox pilot to be picked up to series for the 2018-19 season.

So, for those who didn’t read the books, what is The Passage? The official Fox pitch reads:

The Passage is an epic, character-driven thriller about a secret government medical facility experimenting with a dangerous virus that could either cure all disease or cause the downfall of the human race. The series focuses on a 10-year-old girl named Amy Bellafonte, who is chosen to be a test subject for this experiment, and Brad Wolgast, the federal agent who becomes her surrogate father as he tries to protect her.

Saved by the Bell and Franklin & Bash’s Mark-Paul Gosselaar will star as Brad Wolgast and  Saniyya Sidney will star as Amy Bellafonte. In addition, Vincent Piazza, Brianne Howey, Jamie McShane, Caroline Chikezie, and Emmanuelle Chriqui will also star.

Friday Night Lights’ Liz Heldens will write and Jason Ensler will direct the pilot. Marcos Siega, who directed the pilot shot last year will also be credited as a director. Matt Reeves, Ridley Scott, David W. Zucker and Adam Kassan will produce.
