‘The Walking Dead’ Showrunner Angela Kang Teases Flashbacks in Season 9B

Spoiler Warning! The following article contains spoilers from season 9 of The Walking Dead.

Without a doubt, AMC’s The Walking Dead has certainly shaken things up in its ninth season. After two separate time jumps, the series has catapulted its storyline forward (quite literally) leaving behind several years which have passed and some unresolved questions. Six years have passed leaving lots of ground that could potentially be explored on the show, but will it?

As it turns out, viewers will get to see what happened during that lost time according to The Walking Dead showrunner Angela Kang. Kang spoke with Entertainment Weekly recently and discussed the possibility of flashbacks happening on the series. When asked if viewers will get to see some flashbacks in the upcoming second half the season, Kang answered pretty clearly by saying:

[row]”We’ll see. It will be used, I’ll say, it’s more than once. It’s a little different each time. It’s something that tells specific pieces of backstory that I think are useful to understanding who some of our characters are and why they’re at where they’re at.”[/row]

This should be a comfort to fans who were floored by the unexpected death of fan-favorite character Jesus “Paul” Rovia played by Tom Payne. Jesus was the first victim of the new villainous group, The Whisperers. While battling what the group thought is just another herd, Jesus is shocked when one of the walkers reacts to his attempted attack and ducks under the swipe of his weapon. Then, in the blink of an eye, the walker (which we now know was not a walker at all, but one of the Whisperers), tabbed Jesus through his back.

Payne has even teased the possibility of appearing in flashbacks. He’s been playing coy on his social media pages regarding cutting his long flowing Jesus locks of hair. Additionally, at Fan Fest San Jose, he addressed the topic at his panel by saying, “I can’t tell you if it’s true or not. When I left the show, I was like, ‘Yay! Now I don’t have to keep secrets anymore!’ But no. There are still some secrets I still have to keep. There are mysteries such as the X on Michonne and Daryl’s backs, and what happened with Maggie and Michonne, and all those things happened over the 6-year time jump on the show, so I could imagine Jesus was involved.”

The synopsis for the second half of season 9 has the characters dealing with the fallout of what’s happened throughout those six years, so it’s great that we’ll get to see some action in flashbacks. Check out the synopsis below.

[row]“The second half of “The Walking Dead” Season 9 finds our groups of survivors, both old and new, continuing to deal with the impact of events that took place during the six years that have passed. Since the disappearance of Rick, many of these characters have become strangers to each other, and in some ways, strangers to themselves. What they do know is that they are in undeniable danger. They will soon realize the world just beyond does not operate as they thought. The group’s rules and ways of survival no longer guarantee their safety. A whole new threat has crossed their paths, and they soon discover it’s unlike any threat they have encountered or endured before. The group will start to question what they think they see. What may appear to be normal in this post-apocalyptic world could actually be more disturbing and terrifying than when the apocalypse first broke out. All that is certain is the stakes are high and numerous.”[/row]

It’s a whole new ball game in the zombie apocalypse when The Walking Dead returns on February 10th on AMC.
