Spoiler Alert! The following contains spoilers from season 8 of The Walking Dead.
Fans of AMC’s hit series The Walking Dead are preparing themselves for the biggest death in the television series’ 8 season history. When the series returns next weekend, Carl Grimes (played by Chandler Riggs) will succumb to his injuries revealed in the midseason finale – a walker bite on his abdomen.
While the thought of losing one major character is unbearable in itself, earlier this month, fans were shaken when it was revealed Lauren Cohan (who plays Maggie on the series) was entertaining pilot offers for the upcoming television season. Shortly after, it was confirmed that actress was still in the process of negotiating her season 9 (and beyond) contract.
In a recent interview with TVLine, The Walking Dead season 8 showrunner Scott Gimple puts fans minds at ease when, after being asked how he feels about a new deal being reached with Cohan, he told the outlet, “I’m incredibly hopeful.”
Gimple’s statement is surely a good sign that things are going well in their negotiations, however, he recognizes that they aren’t out of the woods yet. He continues, “these things do happen in TV. But we’re talking.”
If Lauren Cohan were to leave the series at this point, her departure would leave a gaping hole in some of the series’ most major storylines. Maggie, who is currently pregnant, has recently become the leader supreme of Hilltop Community and is poised to take over power from Rick (Andrew Lincoln) while he will undoubtedly be beyond distraught after the impending death of his son, Carl. To that point, Gimple continues, “Lauren is an actor who has such intuition and such power. So yeah, hopefully, it all works out.”
We hope it works out too! What do you think about Scott M. Gimple’s hopefully outlook towards Lauren Cohan’s contract negotiations? Let us know your thoughts in the comment section below.
