Thomas Wayne Cast in ‘Joker’ Origin Movie

As excitement builds for the Joker movie, a replacement for Alec Baldwin as Thomas Wayne was imminent. Brett Cullen has been cast in the role of father to Bruce Wayne, philanthropist, and businessman.  Cullen has not only the looks but the talent to pull off this character and bring something new to the Batman world that we have yet to see in any of the previous installments in the previous Batman franchises.

While Baldwin has insisted that anyone could play this role upon leaving due to scheduling conflicts, the role of Thomas Wayne could be crucial to additional future casting. If the film does not remain separate from the DCEU then this would put Cullen potentially in the Flashpoint role of Thomas Wayne if such a film ever hit production. However, if the films remain separate that leaves a potential opening for Walking Dead alums Lauren Cohan and Jeffrey Dean Morgan to step back into the shoes of Martha and Thomas Wayne later.

Regardless, Cullen’s portrayal proves to provide a nice stepping stone to the creation of Bruce’s descent into the role of Batman and Gotham’s savior. While Joker’s primary focus is on the villain we have all learned to love over the years, watching Bruce interact with his parents, outside of them dying, in films is never focused upon.  By showing viewers another side into that world and the man beneath the clown makeup provides a side of Bruce Wayne we have never truly seen before.

This is not Cullen’s first appearance in the Batman Universe as he previously played a congressman in The Dark Knight Rises. Cullen has also appeared in Netflix’s Narcos, Lost, Damages, and Under the Dome.

Additional casting was also reported recently. The details as to which roles these actors will be stepping have not been disclosed at this time.

Joker hits theaters on October 4, 2019.
