“Thank you for being a friend!”

Happy Throwback Thursday!  This week, we are taking a journey back to this date, September 14, 1985, when a very special sitcom made its television debut.  The beloved television series The Golden Girls made premiered on NBC for the first time 32 years ago today.

Throwback Thursday: 'The Golden Girls,' Thank You for Being a Friend!

The Golden Girls aired new episodes up until 1992 following the lives of Dorothy Zbornak (played by Bea Arthur), Rose Nylund (played by Betty White), Blanche Devereaux (played by Rue McClanahan) and Sophia Petrillo (played by Estelle Getty), four older women living together and experiencing life’s hilarious obstacles together.  The series received critical acclaim immediately as it tackled several taboo subjects for its time such as menopause, dementia, sexual harassment, age discrimination and much more.

The series received a total of 7 Golden Globe nomination for best comedy, one for each season it ran.  They won three of those times and all four actresses on the series received multiple nominations for their impeccable performances.  Estelle Getty was the only one to take home a win for her portrayal of Sophia Petrillo in 1986.

The series truly was a head of its time and hilarious.  Today, the series continues to run reruns in syndication and the episodes are just are relevant today as they were 32 years ago.  Last year, Betty White spoke about the series in an interview with the Hollywood Reporter.  As it turns out, she still watches the show (just like the rest of us) whenever she can!  White said:

“It’s such a blessing to have it still running.  Whenever I get a chance, I’ll make a point of flipping it on, and it’s like going back in time — it’s like you’re right back in there.”

Recently, The Golden Girls series was made into a version of a CLUE game.  Players need to solve the mystery of who ate the last piece cheesecake, what they left at the scene of the crime, and which room they did it in.  We have got to get our hands on this game!

So, today, on the 32 years anniversary of one of our favorite shows, we’d like to say thank you for being a friend Golden Girls!  Check out the series theme song below and, go ahead.  Sing along!  We know you know the words.
