HBO has just ordered a small screen adaption of the best-selling novel to series following a multiple outlet bidding war. Aside from the fact that Dr. Who and Sherlock’s  Steven Moffat will be developing the series, everything else is still unknown, kind of like Henry’s time-traveling ability.

The Time Traveler’s Wife follows the intricate and magical love story of Henry and Clare, who share a happy marriage that is complicated by a gene Henry possesses that causes him to involuntarily time travel.

[row]”I read Audrey Niffenegger’s The Time Traveler’s Wife many years ago, and I fell in love with it. In fact, I wrote a Doctor Who episode called ‘The Girl In the Fireplace’ as a direct response to it. When, in her next novel, Audrey had a character watching that very episode, I realized she was probably on to me. All these years later, the chance to adapt the novel itself, is a dream come true. The brave new world of long-form television is now ready for this kind of depth and complexity. It’s a story of happy ever after — but not necessarily in that order,” Moffat said in a statement. [/row]

With the success of Starz’s time-traveling romance Outlander, it does seem like the perfect time to bring this beloved story to the small screen. On just a $39 million budget, the 2009 film starring McAdams and Bana managed to earn over $100 million at the box office, proving that Henry and Clare’s journey already has a passionate built-in audience.  Moffat will write the series which will be produced by Warner Bros. Television and Moffat’s production company Hartswood Films.

[row]”We are thrilled to be partnering with Steven Moffat, Hartswood, and WBTV on The Time Traveler’s Wife. Steven’s passion is evident in every project he’s written and we are certain that his love and respect for this mesmerizing and textured novel will make it a quintessential HBO series,” HBO programming president Casey Bloys said. [/row]

The new series is just the latest HBO is adding to their original programming lineup, joining the newly ordered Euphoria, a Game of Thrones prequel, Joss Whedon’s sci-fi series The Neversand Danny McBride’s comedy The Righteous GemstonesThese series all join the ranks of HBO staples such as Game of Thrones, True Detective, Big Little Lies, Veep, Westworld, and more.
