‘Call of Duty: Black Ops 4’ Leads the PlayStation Store’s Top Downloads of 2018

Sony has just announced the top PlayStation store downloads of 2018 and, surprising no one, Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 is on top followed closely by Red Dead Redemption 2. Sony has also released lists of the Top VR Game Downloads, Top Free-to-Play, Top PS Vita Games, Top PS4 Themes and Top PS Classics as well. All lists can be found below.

Top Ten PS4 Game Downloads of 2018:

1. Call of Duty: Black Ops 4
2. Red Dead Redemption 2
3. Marvel’s Spider-Man
4. God of War
5. Grand Theft Auto V
6. NBA 2K19
7. FIFA 19
8. Monster Hunter: World
9. Far Cry 5
10. Madden NFL 19

While I’m not surprised that Call of Duty: Black Ops 4, Red Dead Redemption 2, Marvel’s Spider-Man and God of War took the top 4 spots, I am continually surprised at how popular Grand Theft Auto V – a game that is over 5 years old – continues to be. The PS4 version was released in November of 2014 and has dominated the charts ever since. Just goes to show how incredibly popular Rockstar’s Grand Theft Auto Online is. Will we see GTA V replaced next year when Red Dead Redemption 2’s online mode kicks into full swing, or will GTA V continue to dominate until, well, the next GTA is released?

Eh, nothing too surprising here as VR is still in its infancy and there isn’t a large variety of games yet. Job Simulator is good old fashioned fun (who doesn’t want to throw stuff around their office?), Beat Saber is Guitar Hero on steroids (although, much cooler) and Superhot VR does a pretty good job of making you feel like John Wick.

Top Free-to-play Game Downloads of 2018:

3. Brawlhalla
4. Warface
5. Paladins
6. Warframe
7. Pro Evolution Soccer 2018 Lite

Fortnite was #1 to absolutely nobody’s surprise. You can’t go anywhere without hearing about the game, so it only makes sense for it to top end of year lists. Now, whether it was game of the year or not (as the Golden Joystick awards named it) is another debate that I refuse to get into. I do like Warframe though. I can’t say that I’ve played any of the other games on this list yet.

I’ll be honest and say that I didn’t even realize the PS Vita was still a thing. I’m glad it’s still going strong and I’m glad that many of the games on the top 10 lists are remakes of great classics. I love God of War, Jak and Daxter and the Metal Gear Solid series and I appreciate the old-school Castlevania approach that Bloodstained: Curse of the Moon took. Overall, a good list, even if most of the games are a bit older.

I don’t have much of an opinion when it comes to themes. My PS4 is usually wearing whatever free theme the last game I beat decided to give me (Thanks Kingdom Hearts Remastered!). Although I do love that The Last of Us is on this list twice and I must admit that I am rather curious as to what the Tropical Skeleton Dance HiQ Dynamic Theme is.

Once again, a list that Grand Theft Auto dominates, appearing not once, not twice, but THREE times. Still, good games with San Andreas being my favorite. I also have a soft spot for both the Metal Slug Anthology and Twisted Metal: Black.
