Watch the First Trailer for ABC’s ‘The Good Doctor’ Season 2

It’s finally here! On Monday, ABC released our very first look at the highly-anticipated upcoming second season of its megahit drama The Good Doctor.

The first teaser for the sophomore season puts Freddie Highmore’s Doctor Shaun Murphy front and center as we get glimpses of his interactions with the rest of the San Jose St. Bonaventure staff. First, Murphy is shown in the middle of a surgical procedure with Dr. Alex Park (Will Yun Lee) and Dr. Morgan Reznick (Fiona Gubelmann). Next, we see Murphy standing in the hallways of the hospital delivering what looks like devastating news to a patient’s family. Murphy gently reaches out to the family while Dr. Neil Melendez (Nicholas Gonzalez) looks on beside him. The next scene is Murphy at a bus station. He appears to be by himself, but as the bus pulls away, his crush Lea can be seen onboard. Finally, we see Murphy standing beside his friend and mentor Dr. Aaron Glassman (Richard Schiff) whose voice can be heard throughout the clip.

Dr. Glassman’s message is about hope, something which he could certainly use a lot of at the end of the first season. While the teaser plays, he can be heard saying:

[row]”Shaun has a uniquely gifted mind. He faces challenges most of us could never imagine. Like every one of us, he’s made mistakes. He sees things and has insights that are truly remarkable. Shaun gives people hope. Including me.”[/row]

Fans have been anxiously awaiting the show’s return in order to find a resolution to the first season’s cliffhanger ending. At the end of the first season, it was revealed in a shocking twist that Dr. Glassman is suffering from a rare form of cancer, and ultimately is dying. The season’s finale episode centered around Dr. Murphy refusing to accept the diagnosis and researching how he could save his friend and mentor, by any means possible. Due to Dr. Glassman’s health weighing heavily on Shaun’s mind, becomes distracted during a surgery which leads to a mistake. If Dr. Andrews (Hill Harper) gets wind of this error, Shaun risks losing his place in St. Bonaventure. The final scene of the show’s first season shows Shaun and Dr. Glassman walking into Dr. Andrews’ office together to face their fate. Perhaps, in the teaser above, Dr. Glassman is going to bat for Shaun once more and pleading with the hospital board to save his job.

The Good Doctor also stars Antonia Thomas, Beau Garrett,  and Christina Chang. This upcoming season, Lisa Edelstein joining the cast in a recurring role as Dr. Blaize, a recently suspended expert oncologist who returns to St. Bonaventure at Dr. Glassman’s request in order to help with his cancer treatments, so perhaps there is hope on the horizon in season two.

The series was created by David Shore who also serves executive producer along with Daniel Dae Kim, David Kim, and Sebastian Lee.

The Good Doctor returns to ABC on Monday, September 24th!
