‘Transformers’ Origin Story Heading To Netflix in 2020
Last week, Transformer fans were delighted with the news that their favourite Autobots and Decepticons will be returning in a animated trilogy on Netflix.
Netflix and Hasbro have partnered with Rooster Teeth, who have produced popular shows such as RWBY and their latest animated show Gen: Lock, to bring Transformer fans a new and exciting retelling of the origin story of the vast and wondrous Transformers universe.
Transformers veteran, FJ DeSanto will serve as the showrunner with various writers, including Gavin Hignight who worked on Transformers: Cyberverse, Brandon Easton who was a writer on Agent Carter and Transformers: Rescue Bots, and George Krstic who served as a writer on Star Wars: Clone Wars.
John Derderian, Netflix’s director of anime said:
“In this Transformers origin story, we will explore the expansive universe of Cybertron in a way that audiences have never seen before — to the delight of both existing fans and those coming to the franchise for the first time”
Senior Vice President for the Tranformers franchise at Hasbro, Tom Warner added:
“We’re thrilled to work with Rooster Teeth’s new premium studio division to bring an all-new Transformers fan-oriented series to Netflix. Transformers has a rich history of great storytelling and War for Cybertron is an exciting new chapter in the Transformers Universe.”
So right now, we know that we’re getting a fresh look at the start of the Transformers universe. Unfortunately that is all we know. Details on cast, characters, and animation style are currently unknown, although I would guess that the 3D animation used for both Gen: Lock and RWBY would be used for these movies, especially when you consider that Polygon Pictures also animated the Godzilla films on Netflix which had a very similar style. Or we could get a style reminiscent of Transformers: Prime which was also animated by Polygon Pictures.
As we wait for more updates, I’m curious to see each title and how the trilogy will be connected. Despite it’s flaws, I really enjoyed how the anime trilogy of Godzilla was laid out. Instead of having a time gap between each film, they followed on from each other which actually allows for an easier binge on a Sunday afternoon.
As a Transformers fan, I am incredibly excited. I will always welcome new additions to the Transformers universe, especially films that help introduce other audiences to the world of the Autobots and Decepticons. With such a long and rich history, sometimes it can be hard to jump into a fandom with such a vast history and multiple iterations. These films could provide a perfect opportunity for new fans to steadily adjust and familiarize themselves with the lore.
The trilogy is set to arrive on Netflix in 2020. Although solo dates for each film are currently unknown. I would hope that they release all 3 at the same time so we don’t have to wait.
