Tyler Hoechlin’s Superman Returns

We all know this event will be huge. Fans have been asking whether Tyler Hoechlin’s Superman would be making a comeback. He featured heavily in last years crossover Elseworlds. We were introduced to his Smallville home as he teamed up with Kara, Oliver and Barry to save the world.

Whilst fans rejoice at the news that Superman is returning for this years crossover, we were also treated to an exciting announcement that will surprise and delight many.

Brandon Routh’s Superman Returns

Brandon Routh is once again donning his suit, cape and fight for truth and justice. He is taking to the skies and returning as Superman. This will please many long-running movie fans, as Routh last played Superman in 2006’s Superman Returns. It’s a brilliant nod to long-time fans as well as returning the actor to a role he was born to play.

Despite how badly received Superman Returns was by both critics and public audiences alike, there’s no denying that casting Routh as Superman was a great match. The actor himself has expressed disappointment at not being able to take the role forward. Fans have been begging for more Routh-inspired Superman references in the Arrowverse.

Both Supermen in Crisis on Infinite Earths

Both Supermen will return in Crisis on Infinite Earths. Brandon Routh’s Superman and Tyler Hoechlin’s Superman will portray the same character in different realities. Each Superman will be from different earths.

Routh currently plays Ray Palmer in Legends of Tomorrow in the Arrowverse. It will be interesting to see how this role interacts with his Superman doppelgänger! During Crisis on Infinite Earths Routh will portray both Clark Kent, Superman and Ray Palmer, The Atom. Equally both Routh and Hoechlin will be wearing their Superman costumes during the crossover.

We don’t know which episodes of the crossover Routh’s Superman, Hoechlin’s Superman or Routh’s The Atom will appear in yet.

Will the Arrowverse be reset?

The 1980s 12-issue Crisis on Infinite Earths comic-book event reset the DC comic-book universe as readers know it. Could Crisis on Infinite Earths do they same for the Arrowverse? Might it reset the timeline? Would it change the character’s we know and love?

How long will Routh play Superman for?

Is it possible that Routh will no longer play the Atom and will play this version of Superman going forward in the Arrowverse? Perhaps following the crossover, Legends of Tomorrow could return in the spring with Routh portraying Superman. Or is it just a cameo or brief alternate earth visitation?

Only time will tell. The CW’s Arrowverse shows continue in the fall, with Supergirl, Arrow, Legends of Tomorrow and The Flash continuing alongside the launch of new tv series Batwoman. We can expect the Crises of Infinite Earths Crossover before the winter mid-season break.
