With the introduction of Venom into Sony’s Spider-Man universe, fans are really hoping to see a dark and ruthless anti-hero character on the big screen, one that would most likely earn such a film an R-rating. Fans were hoping for more of a superhero/horror film from the dark, symbiote character, but unfortunately, it looks like that may not happen.
Sony is planning to use Venom as a springboard to launch a whole universe based on Spider-Man characters. The studio is expected to delve deeper into this universe in February of 2019. A new report analyzed the film and the future of Sony’s superhero universes in general. According to Variety, Venom is unlikely to receive that R-rating in an effort to be more family friendly.
So far, the first two trailers for the film have been pretty dark, however, the report explains that Sony has future plans for Venom in the greater Spider-verse which they are creating. Those plans include hopes of crossovers with everyone’s favorite friendly neighborhood Spider-Man. In order to be a “friendly neighborhood Spider-Man,” at most, the film would have to bear no more than a PG-13 rating. Sony feels that shying away from a slightly more intense R-rating gives them a greater possibility for future film installments and for that Spider-Man crossover, as well as with other characters in the MCU.
While Sony might be planning to push the levels within that PG-13 rating, Variety says they plan to use humor within the film (which we got a taste of in the most recent trailer) perhaps to slightly soften the dark character.
Directed by Ruben Fleischer, the cast of Venom includes Tom Hardy, Riz Ahmed, Michelle Williams, Scott Haze, Jenny Slate and Reid Scott. Venom is based on the Marvel Comic’s character with a screenplay written by Scott Rosenberg and Jeff Pinker with Kelly Marcel and Will Beall. The film is produced by Avi Arad, Matt Tolmach and Amy Pascal with David Householter and Stan Lee as executive producers.
The official film logline says:
While the film is not yet rated, Venom is set to hit theaters on October 5, 2018. Check out the most recent trailer for the film HERE.
