‘Venom’ Sequel Currently in the Works

Venom was certainly a surprise to most audiences. Whether it was a nice surprise or a bad one, I don’t think many people could have predicted its global box office intake which peaked at $855 million.

With Venom being the 6th biggest film of 2018, it is no surprise that Sony jumped onto a sequel, despite its critical response.

So far, one of the screenwriters from the first film, Kelly Marcel, has been hired to begin writing a follow-up which of course will see Tom Hardy return as Eddie Brock, joined also by Tom Hardy who voices his alien symbiote counterpart- Venom.

Sony have set the “Untitled Marvel Sequel” for release in October 2020. While Sony have not commented, it didn’t take long for comic book enthusiasts to put the pieces together to work out this mysterious release would be for Venom 2, especially since Venom was also released in October.

Nice try Sony, you’re not fooling anyone.

The one thing that remains a mystery is the director. Reuben Fleischer directed the first film but with Zombieland 2 currently in production, it’s hard to say whether the director will combat 2 separate films… that both star Woody Harrelson.

Speaking of Woody, at this stage it appears quite obvious that the sequel will pick up after the post credit scene which saw Eddie interview Cletus Kasady- better known as Carnage after he merges with a symbiote. As a Venom and Carnage fan, this is the death match I’ve been waiting for. After his first appearance in 1991, Carnage has become one of Spider-Man’s most dangerous adversaries, as well as serving as a frequent enemy and occasional partner, to Venom. The difference being that while Venom does indeed have a sense of morality, the word morality simple doesn’t register in the mind of Kasady.

It’s only a matter of time before we start hearing more concrete news, but in the meantime, what are your thoughts about Venom? what do you think needs to appear in a sequel? and what would you like to see appear?

Venom is set to be released on DVD and Blu-Ray in February. Be sure to pick up your copy for deleted scenes, interviews, as well as a “Venom Mode” which involves pop-ups appearing throughout the film that provide various insights to the production of the film as well as revealing hidden Easter-eggs.
