Austin Amelio (Dwight) closed the weekend by discussing his transition to Fear the Walking Dead, shooting in his hometown and what’s next for Dwight.
“I get to work with incredible actors in my hometown of Austin, Texas. Is it hotter than Georgia? I think so. It doesn’t feel like a jungle, just general heat” said Amelio of his move to Fear.
His entrance was his favorite scene to shoot so far, it was his first episode in Texas and it “felt sort of like an old Western film.”
Amelio said he misses his castmates from The Walking Dead, but the new cast on Fear is great and that working with them is his favorite part of moving shows.
In the comics, Dwight becomes the leader of the Saviors, but in the show, Daryl banishes him.
“When you’re working you don’t really have time to read all the comics, but I’m actually glad that they took the story arc I was on over to Fear because I don’t know if it would have been as exciting to be the sort of leader of the Saviors,” said Amelio. “You know, I just I enjoyed that storyline a lot. And I think there’s more depth with that storyline. So I was excited to go over there and continue that, you know, very cool.”
Fans are excited to see Dwight again but will he still look for Sherry after reading her final note?
“If he does find her, it’s gonna be a tough episode to shoot. Because there’s going to be a lot of crying. And I can’t cry for that long,” said Amelio. “I think if he does find her, it’ll be a pretty powerful episode. Especially, you know, like, I don’t know, what would happen after that, if they would feel the same about each other. You know, the relationship from the past is still the same. We had thought about that a lot. Like, I almost hope I don’t find her because I know it’s gonna be a really tough episode if I do.”
Amelio will be back as Dwight when Fear picks up on August 11 with the second half of season 5.
