‘Yellowstone’ Was the Most Watched Cable Series of the Summer

While it was a hot Summer, no one brought the heat more than Paramount Network whose debut western drama Yellowstone managed to become the most watched cable series of the season! After a season full of murders, family trysts and politics, Yellowstone can hang its hat proudly on top – just how John Dutton would want it.

The network released a press release after the show’s season finale last month detailing the first season’s dominating numbers. The series is now the “most watched show on cable this summer and most watched new scripted drama on ad-supported cable since 2016” and “led the list of ad-supported cable’s most-watched entertainment telecasts of the summer with its entire series run (nine episodes) dominating the top 10.” They ended the season on a high note with the season one finale becoming “the most watched episode in ad-supported cable since April.” When all the numbers were crunched,  Yellowstone now holds the title of the 2nd most watched drama of 2018 on ad-supported cable behind The Walking Dead.

Not surprisingly, Paramount renewed the Kevin Costner western drama for a second season back in July. Created by Sons of Anarchy alum and Sicario director Taylor Sheridan, Yellowstone follows the Duttons, a ranching family led by Academy Award winner Kevin Costner, who own the largest cattle ranch in the United States and are constantly facing off against others (and each other) trying to encroach on their land. The series stars Fifty Shades of Grey’s Luke Grimes, True Detective’s Kelly Reilly, American Horror Story’s Wes Bentley, Rouge’s Cole Hauser, and Teen Wolf’s Kelsey Asbille.

In February 2017, Viacom Media Network announced that Spike would be re-branded as Paramount Network come 2018 in an effort to brand themselves closer with Paramount Film studios. Yellowstone joined the new original programming lineup for Paramount’s TV network alongside both Waco and American Women, the latter of which was recently canceled after one season. Waco recently received three 2018 Emmy nominations.

Yellowstone marks Kevin Costner’s first recurring television series role. He did appear on The History Channel’s three-episode miniseries Hatfield’s & McCoys. He’s most known in Hollywood for films such as Field of Dreams, The Postman, and Dances With Wolves for which he won the Oscar for Best Actor.

Production on season two is currently underway and the sophomore season will premiere next year on Paramount Network!
